WorldSpace University...It's here.

As we talked about at last week's meeting, we're all here at WorldSpace for a reason. We came here to create amazing content - content that would be delivered to subscribers all over the world via satellite and potentially via other platforms as well. Though the current level of subscribers isn't at what anyone would have hoped, we still go about our business of creating unique, compelling and exclusive content - the proverbial "killer content."

Things have been rocky along the way for sure. And the path forward isn't as clear as we would like. So it gets back to a question i posed last week - why do people choose to stay? What is it that not only keeps us here, but keeps us motivated to produce this killer content? Well for one, that's what we're paid to do - it's our job and livelihood and we're all professionals. But besides that, what else? Well in my course of talking with different people on the floor, I've heard various things - different things for different people, but many common threads. But in addition to whatever "it" is for you, it should also be the concept of "WorldSpace U"...

I've always viewed my experience here as a one in which i've been able to get experience and learn things that I wouldn't have been able to anywhere else. I've looked at it like grad school - I've gotten my Masters and am on the way to getting my Phd (though that Bahrain course is a hard one this year!). So with all of the trials and tribulations throughout the years, what's helped me deal with it all is the fact that i was getting more from the experience than it was making me crazy.

It's a brave new world out there. Expectations are different. They're higher. Jobs that were once defined by a certain set of parameters aren't defined by those same parameters today. The job of Program Director is greatly different than it was 10 years, 5 years, hell, even 2 years ago. People who run these stations require skills that weren't required before. We've made headway on the floor over the last couple of years with some initiatives (i.e. the Web, strategic thinking and planning) but it's time step it up and make this a focused, systematic effort.

It's time to launch WorldSpace University.

Many things are out of our control here at WorldSpace. But the one thing that is in our control, is what we take away from our experience here. We are in control of how much we learn here and grow professionally. It would be a waste of a tremendous opportunity if we didn't take advantage of it. And not only will this help your channel become a better channel and therefore help WorldSpace, but it will help you personally in whatever you choose to do once you leave WorldSpace. It will make you invaluable to employers.

Everybody on the floor has a certain set of skills. Some are better at some things and others are better at other things. There are some skills that people may feel need they need refined or perhaps feel they don't have that particular skill at all. But with all of the talent and resource we have on the floor, collectively we can help each other. We can teach others, learn from others and develop/refine skills that need development and refinement. Together we can help each other.

It's WorldSpace University - and each of you is a teacher in one area and a student in others.

Within the next week, I will articulate the areas that we will concentrate on and the schedule of how it will be carried out. I welcome any and all suggestions and comments.
