Building Your Personal Brand

Thanks for attending the meeting yesterday for the latest edition of WorldSpace University. I hope everyone found it useful and got something out of it. There was some good things discussed and information presented. Special thanks to Nikki and Ted for their contributions.

Some key points - this stuff is important regardless of the situation you find yourself in. No matter how secure and enjoyable your job is, you should always be networking, connecting and building your profile. Always.

Building your profile is a very subjective thing. There are various ways to do it and many of them make sense. The bottom line is that your goal is to get people's attention. How to do that will varyDo what works for you and for your situation.

And remember, these days an online presence is critical. This can’t be stressed enough. Having a personal blog/website gives you a chance to tell your story in a less formal and more substantive way. It’s building your personal brand.

I mentioned a couple of websites that I have found to be good examples of how individuals present themselves. They are:

http://andrewdubber.com/

http://www.chrisbrogan.com/

And I also mentioned a couple of great professional networking sites that you should be on. They are:

http://www.linkedin.com/

http://www.plaxo.com/

Go there now. Sign up. Network. Connect.

Everyone here has the skills, the knowledge, the experience – if you didn't you wouldn’t be here. You are here because you found a way to get noticed. Many of you came through a reference which speaks to the power of connections and networks. Of course, after finding a way to get in the door, you proved you had the skills and knowledge to get hired. So make sure you get noticed, because once you do you can then demonstrate you have the skills, knowledge, passion, character traits and everything else that is necessary. So go into someone's office and slam your AIR award down on their desk!

And again, all this is pertinent to no matter the situation or job you find yourself in. All of the skills or knowledge you are learning or improving upon here goes towards making you a better and more valuable employee here at WorldSpace while at the same time making you more and more desirable and valuable to future employers.
